Farmed salmon, tuna, cod and prawns make up over 50% of the seafood eaten in the UK. When you consider there are over 60 species of fish and shellfish regularly landed in the UK it indicates that as a nation we are not that adventurous when it comes to seafood.

Good fishmongers can play their part in helping consumers make informed choices to discover tasty alternatives to the big 4 supermarkets. At Captain Stan’s Bembridge Fish Store we take this responsibility very seriously. All our staff have been out on the boat and seen how we catch our fish. All have a Billingsgate City and Guilds in Fishmongery or are in their apprenticeship scheme.

In September 2012 the Hairy Bikers took a trip out on the Shooting Star and visited our Fish Store to discover how we go about this important work.

Huss or Rock Salmon is a very common species around the Isle of Wight. The Hairy Bikers helped to catch and prepare the fish. We then took it to our local bistro called 'Lockslane' where the fish was cooked in a Best of British fashion. To try it yourself we have the recipe in our Recipe Section.

The Hairy Bikers Best of British was aired on the 2nd of April 2013.
